For those of you who are new to this site or have just learned about Windows 10 Mobile, here’s how you can get yourself enrolled in the Windows Insider Program so you can start testing new builds. The process is quite simple and the program is a fantastic way to provide feedback on Microsoft’s upcoming mobile operating system.
First, make sure your Windows Phone device is on the list of supported phones for the Insider Preview program. The following phones are currently supported: HTC One (M8) for Windows, Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 520, Lumia 521, Lumia 525, Lumia 526, Lumia 530, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 620, Lumia 625, Lumia 630, Lumia 635, Lumia 636, Lumia 638, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 720, Lumia 730, Lumia 735, Lumia 810, Lumia 820, Lumia 822, Lumia 830, Lumia 920, Lumia 925, Lumia 928, Lumia 930, Lumia 1020, Lumia 1320, Lumia 1520, and Lumia Icon.
- Enroll in the Windows Insider program
- Download the Windows Insider app
- Open the app and login with your Microsoft Account
- Select Slow or Fast ring, depending on how frequent you would like test builds
- Go to Settings, Phone Updates, Check for Updates to snag a new test build
Prior to installing any new builds, please make sure the phone battery is charged to a minimum of 50%. You will find the process to be quite battery draining and your phone may even get hot at times. Be sure you are downloading new builds using WiFi so you do not exceed any data limits.
For those that did not know, the Fast ring lets you get updates as soon as they’re available, while the Slow ring has you waiting until the builds are a little more stable before you update.
If you decide you want to return back to Windows Phone 8.1, you will need to use the Windows Phone Recovery Tool. Check out our hands-on guide here.Further reading: Microsoft, Windows 10 Mobile, Windows Phone
